Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large loaf of French bread (about 12 ounces)
  • 1 pound flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces provolone cheese or Cheez Whiz
  • 1 cup bell peppers, sliced (any color)
  • 1 cup onions, sliced
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, add olive oil and sauté onions until translucent. Add bell peppers and cook until soft. Toss in steak slices and season with salt, pepper, and oregano until browned.
  3. Mix softened butter with minced garlic in a small bowl.
  4. Carefully slice the French loaf lengthwise without cutting all the way through; open like a book and spread garlic butter on both sides.
  5. Layer half of the cheese in the opened loaf, fill with the sautéed steak mixture, then top with remaining cheese before closing.
  6. Wrap the stuffed loaf in aluminum foil and bake for about 15-20 minutes until heated through and cheese melts. Unwrap for an additional 5 minutes if you desire a crispier top.
